Instead of being freed on bail as he and his lawyer had hoped, convicted sex offender Sal Inghilleri was hit with new federal charges in court Monday.
Inghilleri was convicted and served time in prison for sexually abusing 9-year-old Katie Beers 14 years ago. Most recently he was charged with violating Megan?s Law because authorities say he failed to register as a sex offender when he fled Long Island for North Carolina in 2007. He was brought back to Suffolk County on that misdemeanor charge.
Attorney Thomas Kenniff sought to reduce Inghilleri?s $100,000 bail Monday because of his client?s poor health. However, federal authorities decided to get involved and charge Inghilleri with crossing state lines and failing to register as a sex offender.
Inghilleri faces up to 10 years of federal prison time with the new charges.
