Echoing the results of a recent poll many Long Islanders say they are open to giving illegal immigrants a chance. Day laborer advocate, Reverend Allan Ramirez, says lawmakers should take public opinion into consideration as they debate immigration reform in Congress. Most Long Islanders who spoke with News 12 Long Island say if no one else wants the jobs, immigrants should have the right to take them. A national survey finds that a slim majority, 56 percent to 41 percent, of Americans supports offering illegal immigrants some sort of temporary legal status to stay in the United States. The poll also found two-thirds of those surveyed think illegal immigrants fill jobs that most Americans do not want.
