Pro-immigration rallies were held on Long Island and nationwide Thursday night against the policy of separating parents and children when they cross the U.S. border illegally.
Hundreds, possibly thousands, of undocumented immigrant families have been split up after crossing the border since May. It's the fallout from the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance policy" that calls for children to be taken away from parents who take them across the border.
The policy has sparked outrage among immigration advocates.
“The practice of separating children from their parents at the border is inhumane, it's barbaric and it's abusive,” says Sharon Golden, of Together We Will L.I.
Protesters are making their voices heard as Congress prepares to debate immigration bills next week. House Speaker Paul Ryan says he's going to push for legislation to fix the zero-tolerance policy.
“We don't want kids to be separated from their parents…We believe, because of the court ruling, this will require legislative change,” said Ryan.
Ryan also says votes will come to the House floor next week to fix the immigration system, including a long-term solution for the deferred action for childhood arrivals policy, or DACA.
