Freezing rain and snow made Long Island roads extremely dangerous Wednesday, costing one man his life in a Bay Shore accident.
Despite a covering of sand and salt mixtures, a sheet of ice remained underneath many roadways. Police say 56-year-old Ronald Nanista, of Copiague, died after losing control of his vehicle along Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore. According to police, 74 total accidents were reported in Nassau County before noon.
Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi warned residents not to leave work early in an effort to avoid harsher conditions. Suozzi says the roads, in fact, would be safer during the evening rush hour when more cars were traveling.
