Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity was reported across multiple Long Island communities, prompting concern from immigrant advocates and impacting local school attendance.

In Greenport, photos taken early Wednesday morning at the ferry dock appear to show federal immigration agents stopping an SUV. According to OLA of Eastern Long Island, three men were arrested during the incident. As of Wednesday afternoon, advocates said it remained unclear where the men were being held.

“We do not know where they are, and we are going to be looking to locate where they are with ICE,” said Minerva Perez, executive director of OLA of Eastern Long Island.

The enforcement activity had an immediate effect on the Greenport Union Free School District. Superintendent Beth Doyle said approximately 25% of students did not attend school Wednesday, citing fear and uncertainty in the community following the reported ICE presence.

In addition to Greenport, ICE sightings were reported in Riverhead, Patchogue and Amityville, according to community groups and residents.

The activity follows a tense confrontation on Tuesday in Brentwood, where protesters pushed back against federal agents and at one point surrounded an ICE vehicle. Video from the scene showed demonstrators blowing whistles and demanding that agents leave the area.

Reaction among viewers and residents has been mixed. While some community members expressed concern about the arrests and their broader impact, others voiced support for the agency on social media, posting comments such as “Let ICE do their job” and “Keep up the good work.”

Immigration advocates say the three men arrested Wednesday have lived in the community for decades and have not been charged with any crimes since entering the country.

“We need to bring them home,” Perez said. “These are members of our community for 20-plus years.”
