A Medford man was arrested for stealing two catalytic converters from a Rocky Point parking lot, police say.
According to authorities, Rocky Point barbershop owner Johnnie Can saw a suspicious man walking around his parking lot around 9 a.m. on Saturday. Can says he ran out to stop him after realizing he had just stolen two catalytic converters from a box truck in the back of his business.
“I walked outside, next thing you know, I saw him with a Sawzall in his hand and a converter in the other hand,” he said. “He attacked me with the Sawzall. I grabbed the Sawzall from his hand, we got into a little wrestle. I grab him by the neck, next thing you know, I took his car keys out from the ignition so he knew he couldn't go nowhere.”
The suspect attempted to flee but Can, who has military experience, pursued him.
He chased the man into the Rocky Point State Pine Barrens Preserve, where police and a K-9 unit were able to locate and arrest the suspect.
Daniel Labbe, 42, was taken to a hospital for treatment and charged with multiple offenses including grand larceny.
Can says he's happy he could help police nab the suspect.
“I got him, I got him good. I gave him to the cops right on a silver plate,” he said.
