A ban on self-service gas stations in Huntington may be running out of fuel.
The Town of Huntington is proposing a law that would give stations the option of having self-serve pumps. They would still be required to have at least one full-service pump.
Customers and retailers say this proposal gives consumers a choice, which may allow customers to save money.
Keith Beyer of the Long Island Gasoline Retailers Association supports the proposed change, saying it should lower prices because full-service stations usually need more employees.
The ban has been in place since the 1970s because drivers were skimming gas when prices were high.
A public hearing on the proposal will take place at Huntington Town Hall on Dec. 17 at 2 p.m.
The Town of Huntington and parts of Oregon and New Jersey are the only places in the U.S. that ban self-service gas stations.
