Lifeguards in the town of Huntington are now trained to administer Narcan, the medication that can treat narcotic overdoses.
A demonstration was held on Friday at Gold Star Battalion Beach.
Huntington Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci says it's part of a broader effort to save lives.
“Town employees are tasked with guarding a life and ensuring public safety at our parks and beaches, and they should be trained to handle any possible situation that might realistically present itself in a recreational environment,” he said.
According to Lupinacci, all park rangers, bay constable and public safety officers are also being trained to administer Narcan.
