An American citizen jailed in China for four years is finally home in Huntington with his family, yet his dream is to continue the humanitarian efforts that got him imprisoned.
Steve Kim, an American citizen born in Korea, spent time in China importing furniture. Kim decided to start a Christian church in the country. Kim says the church attracted North Korean refugees who crossed the border into China, seeking a safe route to freedom in South Korea.
Kim helped more than 100 North Korean refugees and was ultimately arrested for breaking Chinese law and given a five-year sentence. It took the efforts of numerous politicians and civil rights activists to get him home.
Kim is hopeful that all of the press attention his story has received will help raise awareness about the plight of the North Korean refugees. He plans to return to China or a neighboring country to continue what he calls his Christian work; helping North Koreans refugees find better lives in other countries.
