The Town of Huntington is cracking down on drivers who illegally park their vehicles in handicap spaces during the holiday season.
Huntington Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson announced a holiday crackdown on handicap and fire zone parking violators Wednesday morning. Last year, Cuthbertson says the town wrote 6,000 tickets for handicap parking violators, 750 of them during the holidays alone. Tickets cost drivers $230.
According to the Town of Huntington, volunteers will be patrolling during the holidays, armed not with ticket books, but with cameras. When they see somebody illegally parked, they take a picture of the license plate and then fill out an affidavit.
The town says the enforcement patrols can be found at the Walt Whitman Mall, and also roaming throughout the Village of Huntington.
