Hundreds of people, some who've suffered personal losses, walked in a Farmingdale Mothers Against Drunk Driving fundraiser Sunday.
Every step participants took at the 5K was to raise awareness and money for programs to prevent drunk driving and underage drinking. Participants said they know the pain that can result.
"It's devastating," said Danielle Rella. Her brother, Officer Kenneth Baribault, was critically injured when an alleged drunken driver hit his cruiser two weeks ago on the LIE. "My brother has a son and our whole family dynamic ? it just doesn't work without him."Dawn Nappi, of Holbrook, walked in memory of her 14-year-old daughter, Angelica. "Our laws definitely need to be enforced," she said. "They need to be stricter. We have repeat offenders on the road constantly."Rella believes the solution is simple. "You can go out and have a good time. Just be responsible. It's not that hard to call a cab or call for a ride or arrange for [a] ride," Rella said.
The Long Island MADD fundraiser was one of 30 held across the country.
