Thousands of people packed Eisenhower Park Saturday to touch and be touched by 500 new names inscribed on the Walls of Honor.
The monument now hosts 6,200 names of those living and deceased who served the country during wartime and peacetime. Nick Graziano of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Fund says there are names going back to the War of 1812. The only war not included on the wall is the Revolutionary War. Graziano is hoping someone comes forward with a relative from that war to include on the monument.
Many in the crowd took pictures and made etchings of names on the wall. The 500 new names join a roll call of veterans who put their lives on the line in wars past and present to keep the country free. The Nassau County Memorial Committee says it will soon have to expand the monument to accommodate the hundreds of applications it's been receiving.
