It was a day of remembrance and mourning for hundreds who came to a funeral Mass for a Garden City monsignor who was killed by an alleged drunk driver.
People in attendance at St. Anne?s Church called Monsignor William Costello a great leader. They remembered a priest who made fun of his own singing and was a devout Mets fan. Costello, 79, spent 54 years ministering to communities across Long Island, living the past eight years in the rectory at St. Anne?s.
Police say Costello was struck by 42-year-old Karen Fisher while he was walking in East Hampton Tuesday night. Police say Fisher?s blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit and she was driving with a suspended license from a prior DWI arrest. Those at the Mass say the monsignor would want the mourners to show compassion for the suspect.Related Information East Hampton mom accused of fatally running down priest faces list of charges Memorial held in Garden City for monsignor
