Winning the lottery can mean a bigger house, a sports car, even a trip around the world. But some Long Islanders have a loftier goal in mind if they hit the jackpot: donating to charity.
Ali Kusinitz, an Old Bethpage resident, told News 12 that if she and the members of her Facebook group win the $570 million Powerball jackpot, some of it will go to a local charity to help the daughter of a family in the community.
"A few months ago, she was in a really bad skiing accident and she is now a paraplegic,” said Kusinitz. “She's slated to come home very soon and the parents are in the process of refitting the house, getting medical equipment for her."
Since 2016, whenever there's a big lottery jackpot, Kusinitz collects $12 from the members of her group to buy tickets and some of that money is donated to a local charity.
“$10 dollars to play and $2 goes to charity,” she added.
Kusinitz says everyone gets together and they make a community event out of collecting the money. But the pandemic forced her to make some changes.
"Since COVID started, we did it through, electronically so that no one has to be near anybody," she explains.
