Nine Honduran children suffering from serious heart conditions are getting a new lease on life, thanks to the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System (LIJ). The children were set to undergo lifesaving operations at Stony Brook University Hospital. However, state health officials ordered Stony Brook to close its pediatric heart unit after three deaths in three months. So, doctors at LIJ stepped in to perform the surgeries.Eight of the children underwent operations and one more is planned. The parents, many who plan to head back to Honduras this weekend, say they are very grateful to all involved.
