Nassau and Suffolk school districts submitted their budget proposals for next year and many homeowners are now wondering where all their extra money will be going.
The average tax hike for Suffolk County is approximately 5.28 percent. In Nassau County, the average increase is 4.22 percent.
Many homeowners in both counties are wondering why the increases are so high and what the money is going to do for the district.
Last year, students in the Patchogue-Medford School District protested when the original budget failed. They hope this year, the budget will pass on the first try. The proposed 14 percent tax increase would add an average of $555 to every homeowner's tax bill. The Patchogue-Medford High School Principal Manuel Sanzone adds that the budget will have to pass to help close the $6 million deficit.
Homeowners will head to the polls on May 15 to vote on their school district?s budget.
