Homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy want changes to the NY Rising policy for closed foundations on elevated homes.
Nearly a dozen homeowners rallied in Lindenhurst on Monday, saying they raised their homes and closed the foundations to comply with local building codes in the Town of Babylon. They are now finding out that NY Rising is only paying 20 percent of the cost.
Babylon town officials say they changed the building code in late spring to require closed foundations to protect pipes, plumbing and drain lines during storms and the winter months.
Lindenhurst resident Joann Fairchild says she went through the application process two years ago, believing that NY Rising would cover 100 percent of the cost to raise her home. She says she's now about $40,000 in the hole.
NY Rising declined to comment on the policy change as it relates to local building codes. It did, however, tout the program, saying it is the first of its kind in the nation and was developed in full compliance with federal guidelines.
