The American Automobile Association predicts 3 percent more Long Island residents will hit the roads this Labor Day weekend than did last year, bucking the national trend.
Though gas prices are up slightly after continuously dropping over the past month or so, it doesn?t seem to be deterring drivers.
?I work too hard to let that stop me from going up state,? Logan Feldman, of Syosset, says.
Robert Sinclair, of AAA, says part of the reason for the increase in the number of holiday road trippers is that Long Island residents tend to have more disposable income than the average American. He says travel out of New York is also expected to increase this weekend. Sinclair says the only time Long Islanders curbed their summer driving was when prices spiked to $4.60 around July 4.
Experts say gas prices could rise again with the prospect of a damaging Hurricane Gustav.
