On the heels of a regular season conference championship, Speedy Claxton will remain at the helm of the Hofstra men’s basketball program for the foreseeable future.
Claxton and Hofstra agreed to a “multi-year extension” Monday, according to school President Susan Poser and athletic director Rick Cole Jr.
"Speedy's first two years as our head coach have been tremendous, and we are looking at a bright future with him at the helm," said Cole. "His love of Hofstra and the men's basketball program is only exceeded by his work ethic and commitment to his players."
The Pride just captured the top seed in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, where the winner will nab an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Since taking over as head coach of the Pride last season, Claxton has a 44-19 record. In his first season, Hofstra went 21-11, but fell as the No. 3 seed to No. 6 College of Charleston.
This season, Hofstra went 23-8, including a 16-2 conference mark, good for the CAA’s top seed thanks to a tiebreaker advantage of Charleston. Hofstra ended its 2022-23 campaign on an 11-game win streak, and now await either William & Mary or Elon as its conference tournament opponent on Sunday.
Claxton’s decorated basketball career began as a player with Hofstra from 1996 through 2000. He led the team to a March Madness appearance in his final year.
Claxton spent a decade in the NBA and won a championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003. He was an assistant coach under Joe Mihalich for several years before being named head coach in 2021.
