A Hicksville woman says she's lucky to be alive after a car hit her and drove off on Thursday.

Nassau police say it happened around 2:30 p.m. on South Oyster Bay Road in Plainview.

Gina, who asked we refer to her by her first name, says she was crossing the street to go to Trader Joes when a white pickup truck hit her.

"I just remember somebody picking me up and saying, ‘I'm so sorry this happened to you’,” she said. "I have a lot of pain in my head and I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy."

Police say the driver left the scene. She suffered a concussion and got six staples in her head.

"I'm lucky to be alive,” said Gina. "I keep myself going. I'm a strong woman."

Her son Sean says he's in shock by what happened and just wants anyone who saw it to speak up.

"I'm worried about my mother,” said Sean. “I want the person to come forward, turn themself in. Do the right thing cause it could be anybody's mother at the end of the day. It's a human life."

Gina and her family say they need the public's help to find out who did this to her and hope the driver will do the right thing by turning themselves in to police.

"Don't do this to other people,” said Gina. "I want this person arrested. I mean, you leave the scene of a crime. It's not right."

Gina says her son keeps her going as she continues to heal.

Police are asking anyone who saw the incident or have video of what happened to call Nassau Police or submit an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
