Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton brought her campaign to Long Island Monday.
She stopped at the Landmark Theatre on Main Street in Port Washington, where she joined a discussion on gun violence prevention with Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington).
Clinton condemned pro-gun lobbyists, saying gun violence kills around 33,000 people a year. And she called for stricter gun control laws.
In doing so, she took her rival for the nomination, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, to task for his opposition to such measures.
Sanders has often defended his stance by saying that he represents a small rural state with few gun restrictions. Clinton pounced on that, saying that most of the guns used in New York state crimes are purchased in states with less restrictive gun control, like Vermont. She even singled out Sanders' home state as the single greatest per-capita supplier of guns used in New York crimes.
Clinton also stopped in Melville for a 45-minute meeting with Newsday's editorial board and took questions from News 12's Doug Geed.
In addition to answering questions on key points in her campaign like women's rights and racial issues, she addressed a widespread problem for many Long Islanders: high taxes.
"There has to be a way to bring down property tax costs," Clinton told the board. "That's a question I'm not sure how to address on the federal level, but I want to keep that on my radar screen as president."
She did pledge not to raise taxes on people making less than $250,000 a year.
She also said she would work to improve FEMA after its handling of Superstorm Sandy.
"There are people who still haven't been able to move back in their homes," Clinton said. "There are people who paid for repairs and have never been reimbursed. I hope it's resolved before I get to be president, but if it's not, I can tell you I will do everything I can to remedy that going forward."
Later on in her visit, she attended a Democratic Party fundraiser at Villa Lombardi's in Holbrook that was closed to the media.
New York's Democratic primary is a week from tomorrow, April 19.
