Town of Hempstead Supervisor Anthony Santino has announced that the town is suing the Hempstead Industrial Development Agency to nullify a tax break agreement for a Valley Stream mall.
As News 12 has reported, residents were outraged when the Hempstead IDA voted to give the Green Acres Mall a tax break that could cost residents in Valley Stream up to $750 a year.
Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos says the town's lawsuit is pointless and ordered an audit of the IDA's pilot program. He also called on the Town of Hempstead to remove the tax burden caused by the IDA.
Santino declined News 12's request for an interview, citing the pending litigation.
On Monday night, residents packed a school board meeting in Valley Stream District 30 to discuss ways to combat the IDA's program. Residents say they plan to show up in full force at a meeting being held Wednesday by the Hempstead IDA.
