Hempstead taxpayers are expressing mixed reviews over a proposed school budget that does not include a tax hike.
Many residents were relieved at the prospect of a 12 percent tax decrease for homeowners, but officials say approval could come at a steep price. Hempstead superintendent Dr. Nathaniel Clay says close to nine administrative positions have already been eliminated, in addition to 29 teachers and 77 teachers assistants. District officials say more than 160 staff members have been warned their jobs might be in jeopardy as well.
Officials say the proposed budget costs less than the contingency budget, which would take effect if the budget fails. Officials say jobs might be saved with the contingency budget, but then some sports and other programs would have to be cut. The vote in Hempstead is scheduled for May 16.
