In a span of just three weeks, a brother and sister from Hempstead lost both of their parents to COVID-19.
Johalmo Lemus, 22, and his 18-year-old sister spoke to News 12 about their loss on Saturday.
Johalmo says their mother, Sandre, and his father, Ernesto, were on ventilators at Nassau University Medical Center at the same time.
Their mother died on Feb. 26. While at her funeral on Tuesday, Ernesto died.
Sandre was a stay-at-home mom, while Ernesto worked as a chef at Spaghettini Pizzeria and Restaurant in Mineola.
The owners and workers at the restaurant set up a GoFundMe to help his children.
Ernesto had been working at the pizzeria for about five years and made pies that were delivered to front line workers at Winthrop University Hospital.
Johalmo Lemus says they're still in shock that they're parents are no longer here, but feels comfort in knowing the impact his mother and father had on so many people.
