A total of 60 employees, including 31 teachers, will be laid off from Hempstead School District in an effort to save money.
The school board voted 3 to 2 to lay off the staff.
Union leaders hope the teachers will be called back at the beginning of the school year. If not, some parents are concerned that class sizes will increase.
The school district would not grant an interview with News 12 regarding the layoffs. News 12 asked for a comment on this story from Hempstead School Board members, but the calls went unreturned.
Some parents speculate the recent influx of children from other countries has overwhelmed the district and is partly to blame for the layoffs.
