The Hempstead Union Free School District unveiled a tentative plan for how it plans to keep students safe when they return in the fall.
Superintendent Regina Armstrong tells News 12 the new school year will most likely include mask-wearing and sitting 3 feet apart. She says it's not set in stone yet but will be soon, especially since the state told districts it would not be issuing any guidance.
"It's a double-edged sword, right? So, some people feel that we should be the ones making the decisions for our students. However, we're not the health experts," says Armstrong. "So, in my case I feel that some decisions should've come from the governor's office as to what we should be doing as a school district. We decided as a school district more than likely we will be adhering to the CDC guidelines that have been placed out for K-12 schools."
Armstrong says she knows some school districts are opposed to mask-wearing, but she wants to ensure that the students and staff are safe.
Some districts say they are waiting for guidance from county health officials. Guidance is coming from Suffolk but it's likely going to be what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has already put out. Nassau isn't issuing guidance but will help districts.
Parent groups are pushing for the new school year to include parent choice when it comes to masks.
"What we're hoping for is to have mask choice in the classroom," says Kelly Roper, of Moms for Liberty Suffolk. "So, the kids will have that option of wearing a mask or not. We understand that they may need to still wear the masks in the hallways and on the buses and we're OK with that."
The chief operating officer of Eastern Suffolk BOCES tells News 12 that districts are collaborating to share ideas and best practices.
