A summer reading list is raising serious questions about one of Long Island's worst-performing school districts.

The Hempstead School District posted a seven-page suggested summer reading list on its website that's littered with typos.

The reading list misspells author George Orwell's name and lists "The Great Gatsby" as "The Great Gypsy."

Roger Tilles, a member of the New York State Education Department's Board of Regents, said in a statement that the list "indicates again that a stable administration is absolutely essential for kids to get the kind of education they need. Hempstead has not had a stable administration for a long time, and the kids are suffering."

Officials from the Hempstead School District could not be reached for comment.
