The Hempstead School Board and local officials gathered today for two reasons: to send off the Class of 2020 and to push for Juneteenth to be made a national holiday.
"We want to make sure we send our students off on this wonderful and celebratory day in a manner that is special and that we make sure they know how proud we are of them," said Hempstead School Board Vice President Carmen Ayala.
New York is among 47 states that legally recognize Juneteenth as a state or ceremonial holiday.
