Hempstead officials say the bitter cold weather caused a water main break in Merrick Saturday afternoon.

They say an 8-inch water main broke on Merrick Avenue. The break affected half a dozen businesses, including a laundromat.

The laundromat says they had to turn away customers as a result, while managers of other businesses say they managed to work without water for a couple of hours.

The town of Hempstead told News 12 that repairs were made and business have gotten their water back on later Saturday afternoon.
