A Hempstead man accused of shooting at officers during a standoff was arraigned Saturday.
Dontae McPhaul, 23, is charged with four counts of attempted murder and is remanded without bail. Police say they went to McPhaul aunt?s house on Harvard Street Friday to arrest him for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. Police say they were met with gunfire, resulting in a nearly nine-hour standoff. McPhaul later surrendered.
McPhaul relatives insist he is trying to turn his life around after spending five years in prison for attempted murder. During the arraignment the judge informed McPhaul of an order of protection granted to the girlfriend who he allegedly assaulted.
