A Hempstead man was charged Thursday with the January murder of a 23-year-old college student.

Police say Suffolk Community College student Abkeen Cochran was in Hempstead visiting friends Jan. 24 when he was shot in broad daylight in the street. He died of his injuries the next day.

Allen Woods, 32, of Hempstead, was charged with the murder. Det. Lt. Michael Fleming says the murder was retaliation for a dispute between Cochran and Fleming, but he does not believe it was gang related.

Nassau police say Woods was arrested numerous times on drug charges. Woods is being held without bail on a second-degree murder charge. He is due back in court March 16.
