The Town of Hempstead hired an exterminator to take care of a rat infestation one day after a News 12 report on the issue plaguing several Nassau communities.
Exterminator David Conti says he plans to collapse their burrows and use bait stations to end the infestation.
It was welcome news for town residents, but in Hicksville, residents say the problem has been going on for years.  One resident who lives just off the Levittown Parkway says rats have been infesting an overgrown area near her home.
“The whole area behind my house is all overgrown…and they're all back there. My dog has gone nuts,” she told News 12.
The Town of Oyster Bay told News 12 that it’s Nassau County’s responsibility to get rid of any rat problems. The county says it’s the responsibility of the property owners. County officials did say they would offer any education and guidance that those property owners may need to get the job done.
