Teens in Hempstead can now partake in one of Long Island's most popular activities without having to leave school.
Students and staff came out to officially open new pickleball and tennis courts at the Hempstead High School Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Superintendent Gary Rush, alongside some of the district’s tennis players, cut the ribbon to unveil 12 pickleball and six tennis courts.
Additionally, the sports complex now has a new digital scoreboard, new artificial turf football field, new track and a new sound system in the gymnasium is coming in the near future.
The district plans to let the public access the courts when they are not being used for student activities. Currently, they host a weekend program that they hope to extend to more families, as well.
The size of Hempstead’s girls’ tennis team has doubled from eight to 16.
