A Hempstead building caught fire Sunday, forcing all of its tenants out into the street ? some long term.Fire officials responded to the flames at 511 Terrace Ave., where two people were taken to the hospital due to smoke inhalation. Firefighters were able to contain most of the damage to the first-floor apartment where the fire started from an electrical outlet.
Most of the residents are back in their homes, but some are getting assistance from the Red Cross. Those who avoided being homeless are thankful.
"I was lying in my bed and I smelled smoke," said tenant Catilla Sampson. "I live on the first floor right next to the apartment that was burning. I would have been homeless too."
