The storm that pummeled Long Island with wet, heavy snow on Friday left behind a slippery glaze, even on roads that had been thoroughly plowed.
Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro says it was a very tough winter storm because the snow hit during a busy Friday morning rush hour. "We are seeing even when we are peeling it off with the plows that it's leaving that glaze on the roads," he says.
The storm caused crashes and spinouts all across Long Island, including a pileup crash on the Long Island Expressway.
Some residents complained that roads that had been previously plowed were quickly made slippery and icy again because of the wet snow.
Exact figures weren't yet available, but police in both Nassau and Suffolk reported a higher-than-normal number of traffic accidents Friday from the storm.
Long Island roads are expected to be extremely slippery into Saturday morning, because refreezing will occur as overnight temperatures drop.
