A bill that would provide protection for families that do not qualify for state or federal assistance could help heat the homes of 625 families in Suffolk County this winter.
The Middle Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or MI-HEAP, introduced by Suffolk Legislator Wayne Horsely (D-Babylon), would offer a one time $800 check for home heating oil.
With the price of home heating oil up from $2.89 last year to a whopping $4.29, Horsely says now is the time for a bill like this.
"This is a very serious situation that could mean life or death,? he says. ?Heat or eat."
Suffolk Executive Steve Levy agrees that the lower and middle income families will need relief this winter. Levy adds that he will try to find room in the budget for the bill.
