A proposed new auto storage facility in Yaphank has neighbors worried about their groundwater.
According to Newsday, a Florida company wants to build a facility that would hold thousands of vehicles damaged in collisions.
The 35-acre site would be on the west side of Sills Road south of the expressway.
Some residents and local officials tell Newsday they worry public wells near the site could be harmed by leaks of hydraulic fluids, battery acid and other toxic material from the damaged cars.
Brookhaven Town Planning Board has scheduled a hearing on the matter for this afternoon at 4 p.m. at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville.
