Hundreds of concerned parents showed up at a public meeting Thursday about the future site of Roosevelt Middle School.
The Roosevelt School District bought 11 acres of land from the county for $1. The land was previously occupied by a mosquito control facility for more than 40 years. School officials say they knew they would have to clean the contaminated land, but didn?t realize how much it would cost. The project is currently $10 million over budget and behind schedule.
Many parents are worried their children will be exposed to contaminated air and land. However, at the meeting school district officials and health officials assured parents that the school and the land would be safe when it opens. Meanwhile, it is unknown who will pay for the extra cleanup ? the school district, county or state.
