Long Islanders have found safe ways to celebrate Halloween amid the pandemic.
Maureen Failla, 10, went going trick-or-treating in her neighborhood in her alien costume and a mask.
"When we go up to doors we'll wear masks,” she says. “It looks like most people are putting out bowls.”
Some homeowners stepped it up this Halloween to help get people into the holiday spirit with their extra spooky displays outside their house.
"In light of everything that has happened this year, we just want to give a little joy back and make it more normal," says Dottie Harrison, of Massapequa.
There were also events like the "truck-or-treat" in Old Bethpage, where volunteers have masks and gloves on.
"We wanted to create an event that kids can come safely trick or treat have candy, but keeping it safe and following all protocols for 2020,” says Amanda Hordos, the co-president of the PTA at Old Bethpage Elementary School.
Health professionals say that as families adapt to this new normal, the best option is to minimize any direct contact with trick-or-treaters and to avoid large, indoor parties.
“Everyone wearing a surgical mask is going to minimize the risk of transmission of COVID, and trying to avoid large gatherings as well, which can cause super spreader events,” says Dr. Richard Tang, of Northwell Health.
