Long Islanders are being warned to limit or even stop eating eel taken from parts of the South Shore.
Suffolk Health officials say preliminary data shows elevated levels of toxic chemicals, called PFAS, in American eel taken from tidal areas between the Carmans River near Yaphank and Quantuck Creek near Quogue.
PFAS can be traced to firefighting foam and non-stick coatings.
PFAS is considered a carcinogen.
