The governor wants the state Health Department to put out an advisory on a rare inflammatory syndrome that can affect children who have COVID-19.
It's called Pediatric Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome, and doctors say children between ages 2 and 15 have been presenting with its symptoms in recent weeks.
Experts say it appears to be a post-viral reaction to COVID-19.
"They get COVID, they get over it. Then a couple weeks later the bodies immune system goes nuts and creates this overreaction," says pediatrician Dr. John Zaso.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed the Department of Health to issue an advisory regarding the condition so it can provide guidance for testing and reporting to health care workers.
Still Zaso says: "Don't panic - we want everyone to be calm with this. It's still very, very rare."
Health officials say so far, 64 children have been diagnosed with the syndrome statewide.
Health care providers, including hospitals, are required to report to the Department of Health all cases of the syndrome potentially associated with COVID-19 in those under 21 years old.
