A portion of the newly rebuilt Long Beach boardwalk is officially open to the public.

Residents and tourists alike are now able to enjoy a half-mile stretch of the iconic boardwalk, between Laurelton and Long Beach boulevards.

It marks the first part of the 2.2-mile boardwalk to be reopened after being badly damaged during Superstorm Sandy.

Officials say the boardwalk is being rebuilt using Brazilian hardwood and concrete. FEMA is picking up most of the $40 million rebuilding cost.

The entire boardwalk is expected to be completed by Nov. 12.
