A lone gunman reached through a car window in Lawrence and shot two people in the chest while two children sat in the backseat Friday, police said.

Investigators said the couple's car was in a parking lot near Buena Vista Avenue and Rockaway Turnpike when the gunman approached. The driver-side window was apparently open when the gunman shot the man, who was driving, and the female, who was in the passenger seat, both in the chest, Nassau Det. Lt. Kevin Smith said.

Smith said the car then rolled across the street, while the gunman ran into a silver or tan, four-door getaway car.

The couple was brought to the hospital and listed in critical condition, police said. The children were not harmed.
