More than 1,500 Long Islanders packed the gymnasium at Farmingdale State College Saturday to protest gun violence and stand up for school safety as part of the March For Our Lives rallies held nationwide.
Participants at the rally want Congress to ban assault weapons like the one used in the Florida massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and to tighten background checks on gun buyers.
Among those calling for gun reform was Kevin McCarthy, a survivor of the 1993 Long Island Rail Road shooting.
"I'm calling on all elected officials to stand up for the citizens…because enough is enough," he told the crowd.
Chloe Mosca, 14, of Carle Place, says she's pushing for gun reform because kids like her shouldn't be afraid of gun violence in schools.
“What I wear in school is more regulated than guns in America. There's nothing to protect me and people that go to my school. There's nothing. Schools are getting shot up and they're not doing anything to protect us," said Mosca.
Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) admits it will be an uphill battle to get gun reform passed in a Republican-controlled Congress. He urged gun control advocates to get “elected officials to pay attention” by using their votes in November.
