A program that matches up people with the special animals who will stick by their side is underway in the Town of Huntington.
The Guide Dog Foundation is celebrating the training of six guide dogs with their visually impaired handlers, free of charge.
During the 10-day training program, students and their dogs learn how to work together as a team.
"They learn how to problem-solve and they learn how to reinforce their dogs for all the good work that they're doing, so they can continue to carry on that work when they're in their home neighborhoods and home environments," says Olivia Poff, of the Guide Dog Foundation.
The four-legged friends are trained to lead a person in a straight line, find and follow a clear path and maneuver around obstacles.
