A Valley Stream man who worked as a guidance counselor in New York City pleaded guilty Tuesday to child pornography charges.
In Central Islip court, 43-year-old John Capuano pleaded guilty to charges of distributing child pornography. He worked as a part-time school guidance counselor in Brooklyn.
According to investigators, Capuano in April 2014 shared pornographic pictures and videos of children as young as 3 years old.
Laura Ahearn, the executive director of Parents for Megan's Law, says child pornography is especially damaging because those involved will likely suffer for the rest of their lives.
A spokesperson for the Department of Education says Capuano is no longer a DOE employee and is ineligible to work in New York City schools again.
Capuano faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum of 20 years.
