The Guardian Angels patrolled Hempstead for the first time after a stray bullet struck and killed a girl inside her home.
The bullet struck 12-year-old Dejah Joyner on Oct. 16. According to the Guardian Angels, residents asked them to patrol Hempstead after the crime. Residents hope the group will make a difference.
"We're gonna be here on a regular basis, which is gonna affect all their other businesses," Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa said, referring to criminals.
The volunteer neighborhood watch group walked the streets Sunday, handing out fliers to houses. The patrol was the group's first in Nassau County; members usually patrol the streets of Suffolk County.
The group hopes someone will come forward with information that will lead to an arrest in the case. A $75,000 reward is being offered.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
