Groups push for Rep. Zeldin's removal from Holocaust council
A number of Long Island activist groups are calling for the removal of Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin from the Holocaust Memorial Council.
The groups formed an online petition as a response to what they say are Rep. Zeldin's tepid comments after the violence in Charlottesville.
That petition has more than 1,000 signatures.
They also say they are upset that the Shirley congressman has not denounced President Donald Trump's comments about blaming both sides for the violence.
"We want to see him unequivocally denounce neo-Nazism and the KKK and white terrorism with no 'but' after that," says Shoshana Hershkowitz, of Suffolk Progressives. "We also want to see him take President Trump to task for his remarks on Charlottesville."
When referring to those associated with the KKK and Nazism, Rep. Zeldin said in a statement, "Their violent acts inspired by deep hatred are disgusting, un-American, and unwelcome in our great nation."
