Protesters gathered on the steps of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola, declaring that the Nassau police should not be working with ICE, after the county executive recently announced a collaboration between the two.
One protester said that people are afraid to go to church.
Legislator Carrie Solages said that attendance at schools has been dropping.
Many protesters described a pervasive fear among immigrant communities.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blackman said that they are not going after people who are law abiding.
“If you’re here with an immigration status that’s not legal, we’re not coming after you. We’re not raiding schools, we’re not raiding churches like they would have you believe," Blakeman said.
