A new list out today identifies the most dangerous roads on Long Island for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Vision Long Island identified Merrick Avenue in Freeport as the most dangerous road on Long Island for pedestrians. After the Merrick Road area in Freeport, the next worst spot in Nassau County for bike and pedestrian accidents is West Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway in Valley Stream. Then it's Sunrise Highway and Grand Avenue in Baldwin.

Suffolk Avenue in Brentwood and Central Islip was tops in Suffolk County, followed by New York Avenue in Huntington Station and William Floyd Parkway in Mastic-Shirley.

Areas near transit centers or railroads also ranked high on the list.  

Vision Long Island director Eric Alexander says there are easy things that can be done on roads to improve safety.

"We're looking at medians, street trees, better crosswalks, better signal timing, better lighting," said Alexander. "There are whole sorts of design treatments to the physical presence of the road to bring the motor speed down and also encourage pedestrians to cross at the right locations."

The group says that governments and private developers are recognizing how important pedestrian safety is and improvements are being made. They say they would like to see those improvements happen sooner rather than later.
